Police: False robbery call made with pre-paid cell phone

PNT Staff Report

A Portales police spokesman said a phone call reporting an armed robbery at a local bank on Friday that turned out to be a false alarm was made using a pre-paid phone.

Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said police were unable to determine an exact location from where the call was made or who owned the phone because a person does not need to provide personal information when purchasing a pre-paid phone.

Berry said a check with local phone service carriers determined the call originated in the Portales area.

Portales dispatch received a call about 5 p.m. Friday reporting an armed robbery in progress at Portales National Bank.

Portales responded to the call but found no evidence of a robbery.
