Hank Baskett’s offseason got at least $1.545 million richer on Thursday.
That’s the amount for the one-year contract the Philadelphia Eagles offered to the Clovis native on Thursday, the first day teams can offer contracts to restricted free agents.
As a restricted free agent (three years of service), Baskett has until April 18 to seek contracts from other NFL teams. The league’s free agency period begins at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard time Friday.
“Whatever happens with that happens with that,” said Baskett, who set career highs in 2008 with 33 receptions and three touchdowns for 440 yards for the Eagles.
Philadelphia recovered from a 5-5-1 start, blew out the rival Dallas Cowboys 44-6 on the last day of the regular season to sneak into the playoffs and advanced to the NFC title game.
“I love the team and I love being up there,” Baskett said. “We came so close this year, we can get that close next year and maybe win it all.”
If another team signs Baskett to an offer sheet, the Eagles have seven days to either match the offer or receive a second-round draft pick in return.
If Baskett accepts the Eagles’ offer, he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2010 and can sign with any team. The 2001 Clovis High graduate said he’d take a wait-and-see approach over this and possibly the 2010 offseason. Baskett
“It could be a one-year deal. It could be a multi-year deal,” he said. “That’s out of our hands. I’ve got to do the same thing, fight to keep a job.”
“A tender offer doesn’t guarantee a roster spot. I’ve still got to prove myself.”
The Eagles also offered one-year contracts to offensive lineman Nick Cole and linebacker Tank Daniels.
Baskett’s offseason also includes a celebrity wedding. He and reality TV star girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson are planning a June 27 wedding at the Playboy Mansion, and Baskett is receiving national exposure after the couple appeared on rapper Snoop Dogg’s MTV show “Dogg After Dark” and asked him to be the wedding singer
Baskett has no definite answer yet from the rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and said he has thanked Wilkinson too many times to count for introducing him to her famous friend.
“She pulled off the impossible,” he said. “I thought it would be, ‘Hey, my name is Hank,’ but she got me on the show. That was incredible.”
