Tarleton hands Hounds pair of LSC setbacks

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State overcame an early 6-0 deficit with three big innings in the opener and the Texans went on to a 19-10, 7-2 Lone Star Conference baseball sweep over Eastern new Mexico University on Friday.

Six players drove in at least two runs in the seven-inning opener as the Texans (10-11-1, 6-7-1 LSC) scored seven in the second to take a 7-6 lead, then added four in the third and six in the fourth. Tarleton State clobbered 23 hits, including four home runs, off three ENMU pitchers.

Seth Clabaugh tripled in Sean Cruce with two out in the top of the first, then scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Freddy Carmona. The Greyhounds (9-11, 5-9) sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run second, chasing Texans starter Joseph Wilson, but left the bases loaded.

Aaron Dalton and John Ropple hit two-run homers for the Texans in the bottom of the second, while Chris Casazza added a solo shot later in the frame and Chad Cloud belted a two-run homer in the fourth.

Russell Campbell (1-2) went two innings and took the loss for ENMU while Brent Lewis (3-0), the second of three Texans hurlers, worked 3 1/3 shutout innings to get the win.

In the second game, ENMU’s Ethan Wagner hit a two-run homer, his second of the season, in the top of the seventh off P.J. Burns (1-4) to tie the score 2-2, but Tarleton came back with three runs — one earned — off reliever Evan Orsak (2-1) in the bottom half and added two more in the eighth off Jerry Manning.

ENMU starter Ismael Solis worked 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs, one earned.
