The question of the death penalty has divided our nation for a long time. It’s not likely that Gov. Bill Richardson’s signature on legislation banning the death penalty will end the struggle.
New Mexico will become the second state to ban the death penalty since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstituted it in 1976. Fourteen other states do not impose the death penalty.
The debate rages on though as Bernalillo County Sheriff Daren White vowed to seek a statewide ballot measure on the issue. At the same time federal legislation to once again ban the death penalty is progressing.
