Students study possible careers

Eighth graders-spent Friday job shadowing a person working in a career they might want to enter. Students have taken interest inventories, which indicate several careers they might pursue based on their high interest scores. If at all possible, students then contact a professional working in one of those fields and request permission to be with that person during school hours on career day.

When students return to classes Monday, they will write about what they learned about various jobs. Career books give students information about the education, training and expected salaries associated with various career choices.

MAPS testing starts this week

This week and Monday and Tuesday of next week will find students taking the computer MAPS tests. They take this test three times each school year, and the computer data graphs the students’ growth in the core curriculum classes. If data indicate students have missed a concept, the report generates activities to help the students catch up.

Band concert Monday

Band director Cindy Stone invites the community to the Portales High School Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday for the spring concert. Students have been practicing for this musical event, and they promise a real treat for the audience.

Principal: Raise those grades

Principal Steve Harris reminds students to bring those grades up. With only five weeks of school left this year, there is very little time left to cinch passing to the next grade, he said.

Spring sports

Portales Junior High School students are finishing the track schedule Saturday with a meet at Yucca in Clovis. Numerous junior high students are also competing with the high school baseball, softball, tennis and golf teams.
