In what was a weekend of LeBron James buzzer-beater replays, bad movies and heartfelt thanks to our veterans, I never really had a thought that could compete verbosely with my new idea for duct tape last week.
So here are my three best attempts at such:
n In what was one of the worst-kept secrets of the year, President Obama has selected Sonia Sotomayor to replace David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Tuesday was the day when rank-and-file Senate Democrats and Republicans spoke highly of Sotomayor and her experience, and the time for supporters to note she was first appointed by President George H.W. Bush and promoted by President Bill Clinton.
But I can’t wait for the next few months, when Republicans start behaving like Democrats and Democrats start behaving like Republicans. How many Republican senators will say they must use filibusters and every necessary tool if they object to the appointment, like Democrats said regarding Bush justices? And how many Democratic senators will say the filibuster isn’t the proper way to deal with appointments, and that President Obama’s picks deserve an up-or-down vote, like Republicans said regarding Bush justices?
n I saw “Terminator: Salvation” this weekend and, judging by the box office totals, you didn’t.
My short review is that it should have been called “Terminator 4: Rise of the … Meh.”
My longer thought is something I ask not only of the Terminator series, but of other sci-fi epics. Why is it that the Terminator machines are so efficient when they’re shown killing off minor characters, but they abandon all of these tactics when they meet the primary characters? A robot capable of crushing a human skull shouldn’t waste time trying to choke a human being or throw him against a wall.
n Over the weekend, I was made aware of the odd following a shirt with three wolves and a moon has received on Amazon.com. The shirt, which is called “Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt,” is the subject of over-the-top descriptions of the shirt’s coolness and capabilities.
My favorite is, “The Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt gave me a +10 resistance to energy attacks, +8 Strength, and added 30 feet to my normal leap.”
In all, Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt has 731 customer reviews as of today. To contrast, there are only 572 reviews for “Wuthering Heights.”
This feels to me like the next coming of “Chuck Norris Facts,” statements of exaggeration like, “If you have five dollars and Chuck Norris has five dollars, Chuck Norris has more money than you.” Somebody compiled those into a book a few years down the road, and I instantly thought, “Couldn’t I have made a few thousand dollars doing that first?”
I think I might start on the “Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt” series. I have a feeling Keanu Reeves will be involved in the movies somehow.
