Local reaction to Jackson and Fawcett deaths

Two figures who definied a generation are gone within six hours of each other.
The deaths Thursday of favorite “Angel” Farrah Fawcett and “King of Pop” Michael Jackson surprised and stunned us all.
We asked some local folks to share their thoughts:

Farrah Fawcett:
1. Brandy Rains, stay-home mother in Portales, said:
“She had a long hard fight. It’s tough to be cancer. Cancer is hard to deal with.”

2. Melissa Arguello, a student at Eastern New Mexico University, said: “ I grew up watching her. It’s sad to see her gone, but I am sure she is at peace now. She had to suffer a lot from cancer.”

3. Chris Tarango, Russell’s Supersave cashier in Portales, said:
“Great actor, there needs to be a cure for cancer.”

Michael Jackson:
1. Brandy Rains, stay-home mother in Portales, said:
“It’s sad. I hate to see anybody die. He is a person just like anybody else. I can’t believe he died.”

2. Melissa Arguello, a student at Eastern New Mexico University, said: “It’s an end of an era.”

3. Chris Tarango, Russell’s Supersave cashier in Portales, said:
“Sad story, sad ending.”

4. Jeff Cox, a graduate from Eastern New Mexico University, said: “A lot of surgerys he did, it harmed his body, so it was expected. His life was kind of weird also.”

5. Roger Rechder, a bicycle shop owner in Portales, said:
“It is a shame that he died so young.”
