Students of a Broadway-style singing class at Clovis Community College are gearing for their final exam.
But they won’t need pen and paper.
They’ll be performing their final for the community at CCC’s Town Hall 7 p.m. Tuesday. Admission is free.
The 10-student class worked through the summer semester on a final performance, which counts as the majority of their grade.
Teacher Caleb Brandon said he was proud after Tuesday’s first run-through.
“It’s going to be a super show,” he said.
Brandon, a part-time teacher at the college, said he is still getting used to being a teacher instead of student. This is the second time he has taught the class.
“I always wish I had more time to spend with them one-on-one. Them just getting up there will be a great testament to what they’ve learned,” he said.
While the class retains many students who enjoy performing, a few new faces were recruited this summer.
Sr. Airman Nick Ball is attending CCC to get a degree in munitions technology. He decided to take the singing class for fun.
Ball, 25, said he majored in musical theater while in college.
“I’m not new to the stage,” he said. “But being on stage isn’t something you do just once.”
Ball will be performing “Those Were the Good Old Days” from Damn Yankees as the devil.
“I was having trouble deciding what to perform,” Ball said. “Someone suggested that song and I decided it was genuinely hilarious and being the devil sounds amusing.”
Ball said he wished every class’ final was as hands-on and practical as the performance.
“It rocks,” he said.
Laura Campagne of Clovis, Calif., said the class provided a great opportunity for a lifetime choir girl who was in Clovis for a couple of months during the summer.
“This is the best part of my week,” she said.
Campagne, 19, is in town to be with her sister while she has a baby. She decided to take a couple classes at CCC. She’s been in choir since the fourth grade.
“I’m actually a little nervous. I’ve never done a show with acting too,” she said.
Campagne plans to perform “Popular” from Wicked.
