Late local historian honored

The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Initiative is set to honor Rose Powers White, historian of the Portales area’s early days of settlement, with a historic roadside marker.

A dedication and reception is scheduled for 4 p.m. July 30 at the Portales Public Library. State Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, will speak.

Ruth White Burns of Clovis, White’s daughter, said when her mother moved to the area in 1923, there was no written local history.

White began collecting and recording the experiences of her husband’s family, who came in 1882, and of other “old-timers,” Burns said.

The initiative aims to recognize historically significant women with roadside markers in each county and pueblo, and on Apache and Navajo lands, according to a news release from the organization.
