The Portales News Tribune reported that the Roosevelt County Chapter of the American Red Cross was sponsoring a project to provide 50 ditty bags for servicemen in Vietnam that Christmas. Items needed for the bags included the following: ball-point pens, pen-sized flashlights with batteries, small pen knives, windproof cigarette lighters and flints, plastic soap cases, small packages of writing paper with self-seal envelopes, terry cloth washcloths in dark colors, nail clippers, plastic cigarette cases, combs, decks of playing cards and pocket-diary type calendars.
