WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State erased an early 4-3 deficit with seven consecutive points in the first set and the Mustangs went on to a 25-14, 25-9, 25-14 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in Lone Star Conference volleyball.
Miranda Byrd had eight kills and Lauren Bayer added seven kills and five total blocks as the Mustangs (9-17, 5-1 LSC) remained in a tie for second place in the conference with Abilene Christian.
The Zias (5-17, 0-7) got five kills each from sophomore Jessica King and freshman Madison Rhoades, and four kills, 11 digs and five assists from junior Veronica Valdez-Kent.
After cruising in the first set, the Mustangs bolted to a 13-2 lead in game 2 and were never seriously challenged. The Zias opened a 3-0 margin at the start of the third game, but Midwestern quickly took command with the next seven points — taking the lead for good on a Hillary White kill.
Senior libero Caitlin Murphy finished with 13 digs for the zias, raising her total to 1,791 for her career.
The Zias continue LSC play on the road on Saturday, facing Cameron in a 1 p.m. (MDT) clash at Lawton, Okla.
