Except for a brief stint in Albuquerque as a hair model, Cindi Onstott, owner of Cindi’s Treasures, has lived in Portales for most of her life.

Onstott’s business background is varied. She’s worked in or owned automatic car washes, a detail shop, a furniture store and a dry cleaner in the last 20 years.

Onstott’s current business started out with selling garage sale items. Soon, others brought her consignment merchandise.

The owners from neighboring Ashley Furniture approached her later on wanting to know if she could sell their scratched and dented items and things just grew from there, she said.

“I wanted something with kind of a homey feel, but with a variety of things,” Onstott said. “Something that family and friends are trying to find for their homes — that is relaxing.”

Onstott said she was always interested in design and it was fantastic when she was able to open her shop in Portales.

“I I love it and I like meeting people,” Onstott said. “I’ve always worked with the public.”

When customers enter Cindi’s Treasures many say it is almost like walking into someone’s front room. That’s because of the setting and furniture.

“I’m a people person,” Onstott said. “I have a lot of the older women who come in and have tea or hot chocolate and snacks and we just sit around and whatever.”
