Science captures students’ minds

Project Green House, volcano research, painting the globe, and paper transformer are four programs taking on special significance for science students at Elida Schools.

The green house project helps students learn to plant and care of plants.

Vigo Torske, a science teacher at Elida, said they started the green house project two weeks ago.

“Horticulture is where we learn about plants and how to take care of plants. Here we also learn about greenhouse management,” Torske said.

“I like this class because I could be outside and be hands-on and I like the staff,” student Randy Jasso said.

Torske also offers another science project in his geography class where students gain hands-on experience by using an earth-shaped ball to paint their own globes.

For students at lower grade levels, teacher Joeli Cathey designed the volcano research and paper transformer.

“This volcano project is for studying landforms and changes to the earth,” Cathey said.

Eric Summers along with classmates made different types of volcano models and learned to tell the differences between volcanoes.

In Cathey’s class, used papers were reborn. Cathey taught and trained her students how to transform used paper into different shapes.

Larry Gregory, principal at Elida, said the school has always attached the importance of science to a student’s overall education.

“At each grade level, we have such projects throughout the year. Our teachers are doing a very good job on science teaching,” Gregory said.
