Volunteers from Eastern New Mexico University are looking for work.
Eastern In Action Director Robyn Pease said the Eastern in Action service group is looking for small and large opportunities to help people April 17 in the Portales city limits.
“We have 148 students, faculty and staff willing to help with chores,” Pease said. “We need to get some more job sites because we have a lot of people who want to help.”
People can pick up application forms at Portales City Hall and Yucca Telecom. Eastern In Action will be accepting job forms until Saturday, but it could carry over into next week. As of Wednesday only had six job sites for them to do, but they are still looking for more.
The one-day even, sponsored by Associated Students of ENMU, takes place on from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The group started last year as a way for the school to give back to Portales for its support over the years. The idea is styled after a similar event at Texas A&M.
“It’s pretty much any kind of task and we want to empathize that it doesn’t have to be need-based,” Pease said. “It can really be anything. If it is mowing the lawn, we are asking that they have a lawn mower because we don’t have one.”
The day of service for residents can be cleaning yards, pulling weeds, painting, washing vehicles, helping someone move and more. They are also seeking donations for cleaning supplies to help them perform their task.
Eastern In Action student volunteer Christine Neurauter said that they were sending some people out to look over a few job sites today.
“We’re still working on it,” Neurauter said. “We’ll do anything, we’ll pull weeds, paint their house if they need it, clean windows or rake leaves. If anyone needs help, it doesn’t matter if it is big or small. We’re willing to help.”
