Press release: City requires mandatory water rationing

Due to recent elevated watering demands, the City of Portales has entered mandatory water rationing for the entire Portales community. This will be in effect until water tank levels rise back to acceptable levels of twenty (20) feet. Residents are requested to not water at all until further notice to allow tank levels to reach desired levels as outlined by the City of Portales Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan. The City of Portales will issue a statement at such time that the mandatory water rationing stage has been reduced back to the water watch.

It is the policy of the City of Portales to enact water conservation practices in order to insure and protect the availability of the supply of water for all residents and consumers of the City. Ongoing voluntary water conservation measures are continuously in effect to preserve the availability of the water supply. During periods of drought, or at any time during which the supply, pumping capacity, weather conditions and weather forecasts indicate that the availability of water is threatened or comprised, the mandatory measures set forth in the City of Portales Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan will become effective and will be implemented and enforced in the manner provided in the plan. This plan can be found on the City of Portales website at www.portalesnm.org.
