Samplings of recent calls received by Portales-area law enforcement officers, according to reports:
An officer was dispatched to the 100 block of North Avenue E at almost 3 p.m. for a report of possible child abuse. When he arrived, a woman told him her niece said the adult responsible for her had kicked her in the stomach. The officer questioned the child, who told the same story, but he could see no injury to the girl.
The officer spoke to the girl’s caretaker, who said the child was upset because they couldn’t reach her father to pick her up. The woman said she sent the girl to her room, the girl became more agitated and the woman called the girl’s grandmother to pick her up.
The child was playing and climbing on furniture while the officer was at the home. Another officer who was familiar with the girl looked at her stomach, and she giggled.
The reporting officer noted his intent to refer the case to the Children, Youth and Families Department for further investigation.
