RiverHawks post soccer sweep over ENMU

Freedom New Mexico

Josue Garcia scored the deciding goal in the 78th minute on Sunday, and Northeastern State edged Eastern New Mexico University 4-3 in Lone Star Conference men’s soccer at the ENMU pitch.

The RiverHawks completed a sweep of the LSC doubleheader after edging ENMU 2-1 in overtime in the women’s matchup.

Freshman midfielder Andy Wilkinson posted the third hat trick in the history of the ENMU men’s program, all coming in the second half, but the Greyhounds (8-6-2, 2-3-1 LSC) were never able to overcome Northeastern’s 2-0 lead at halftime.

Wilkinson scored twice in a five-minute span early in the second half to tie the score, then found the net again at the 70:59 mark when he headed in a corner kick from Edgar Bear to make it 3-3. The Garcia, who assisted on Cory Cipollone’s goal earlier in the half, took a cross pass from Cipollone and beat ENMU goalkeeper Oscar Hernandez with 12:33 to go in regulation.

The Hounds play their final road match of the season on Sunday at LSC foe Incarnate Word.
