My turn: Always something new to learn

How can you tell what kind of fish you caught?

This is one of many questions amateur anglers, children and experienced fishermen had a chance to ask Saturday at Oasis State Park’s 20th annual Kid’s Fishing Clinic.

The session included volunteers and park rangers answering those questions and many more questions. I also got the opportunity to learn new things.

I knew fish could see and smell but it never occurred to me how a fish hears.

They hear through their octavo-lateralis line, which is a lateral line that runs down the side of the fish and along its head. They feel vibrations through the water. So, they hear and feel noise through that line.

The most popular station was how to fillet a fish. Children got to touch a dead fish and learned how to clean it.
