Season openers: The Hounds, with seven players sitting out one-game suspensions for participation in an unsanctioned spring league, rallied to beat NAIA member Northern New Mexico 81-76 at Greyhound Arena on Friday. The Mountaineers absorbed a 78-52 loss to Division I Boise State on Saturday at Boise, Idaho.
Notes: This is the first of a three-game swing into Colorado for the Hounds. They play Fort Lewis on Friday night and Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday afternoon at Durango, Colo. … Western State went 5-21 last year, including 2-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. … At Boise State, the Mountaineers were led by 6-foot-1 senior guard Weylan Towns with 18 points and 6-6 senior guard-forward Martin Graham with 15. The Bronchos cruised after building a 46-24 halftime lead.
