My turn: Forget being practical

I went to see the new Harry Potter movie last weekend and for those of you Portales residents who haven’t gone yet, what are you waiting for? I mean, it’s Harry Potter!

Okay, so the 9-year-old in me never completely faded away. Like many others, I am a Harry Potter groupie and devotedly go to every movie.

I was naive enough to invite my overly practical friend/co-worker and think that he could actually sit back and just enjoy the story. I was wrong.

As soon as the movie ended, the first words out of his mouth were “There’s no way he (Harry) could plunge into an ice cold lake in the middle of winter and not get pneumonia.”

I did a mental head slap at this, because I wondered how lack of illness from plunging into an ice cold lake is any less realistic than people flying around on broomsticks.

Imagination is the whole point of Harry Potter and when those of you with overly practical minds go see it, just sit back and enjoy the magic. The rest doesn’t matter.

And don’t forget to go watch Borrowed Time 7 p.m. Saturday at Java Loft in Clovis.
