My turn: Family issue inspires health changes

My journey started one year ago on Feb. 7. At 54 years old, my brother began experiencing significant health issues.

In a hospital waiting room, I took a good long look at myself. I weighed 260 pounds, I got out of breath just climbing a couple of flights of stairs. It was time to do something about it.

I had seen information about an exercise program and it was time to give it a try. I ordered it. It was far more difficult than I had imagined. I was determined. I stayed with it, I did what I could and I got better every day. I started eating better and worked hard.

That seems like years ago.

My brother is now much better. I now weigh 180 pounds. I work out every day. I feel great.

I have to admit, some days are a challenge. We always think of a journey as a destination. My journey is as much the trip as arriving. I hope to arrive in one piece, a little thinner and in better shape. If you are taking this journey, send me a note, and we can compare road blocks, potholes and detours.

Happy trails.
