Illinois man to face charges in New Mexico

A 59-year-old Illinois man was indicted by a federal grand jury for sexual Internet activity with what he believed to be an 11-year-old Melrose girl.

Jerry Wexler of Barrington, Ill., faces up to 30 years imprisonment for the crime of attempted production of a visual depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to a press release from the Curry County Sheriff’s Office.

Thinking he was contacting an 11-year-old girl, Wexler began chatting in July with sheriff’s investigators using an undercover profile, the release said.

Over a period of several months, Wexler chatted with the girl, confirming her age and initiating sexual conversations and sending nude images of himself. He provided her with a calling card so she could call him and when an undercover female officer called him, discussed sexual activity between them, the release said.

He also mailed her a webcam, encouraging her to transmit nude images of herself to him.

Wexler will be extradited to New Mexico for trial in U.S. District Court, the release said.
