SAN ANGELO, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team held 10th-ranked Angelo State to five hits on Friday night.
The Rambelles didn’t need any more than that, benefitting from 12 walks, two hit batsmen and seven wild pitches in a 12-1 Lone Star Conference South Division win over the Zias. The game was shortened to 4 1/2 innings by the eight-run rule.
The teams will complete their three game series with a noon (MDT) twin bill today.
Catcher Kacie Easley highlighted ASU’s five-run first off junior Erin Roufosse (6-22) with a three-run double. The Rambelles’ only other hit in the frame was an RBI double by Elsamartina Apo.
The Rambelles (31-5, 8-2 South), who sent 10 batters to the plate in the first, sent 12 more in a six-run second keyed by a two-run double from second baseman Alix Dean, a rally that included six bases on balls.
Sophomore Brittany Widner restored some order, striking out Carly Peters to end the second with the bases loaded. But despite allowing no hits in her 2 1/3 innings, she issued four walks and the Rambelles platee their final run in the fourth on two walks, two wild pitches and an RBI groundouot by Allyson Seider.
ENMU (10-27, 2-8) managed its only run off Clarissa Molina (18-2) in the third when Tessa Fiorriti reached ona fielder’s choice and rode home on shortstop Paige Colburn’s two-out doouble to left-center. The Zias’ only other hit was a two-out, opposite-field single to left by first baseman Taylor Howard in the top of the first.
