Hi from Illinois
Thwyla (Bethany) Rose, a 1950 graduate of Portales High School, sends a big hello from the Land of Lincoln.
She’s recovering from hip replacement surgery at Walnut Grove Center in Morris, Ill.
She said she grew up farming in and around Portales and moved to Illinois some years ago to be with her children… and she misses “hard work and that good old New Mexico sunshine.”
To write or wish her well: Thwyla Rose, c/o Walnut Grove Center, 1095 Twilight Dr., Morris, Ill. 60450

Kudos for kids
Students at Mesa and Zia elementary schools recently got a taste of Wall Street and took home some top awards.
The occasion was the state competition of the Stock Market Game.
Mesa students took second place and the Zia students came home with a third place.
Students learned about investing and they will be honored April 28 by Fidelity Investments and the New Mexico Stock Exchange at a ceremony in Albuquerque.
Today in history
On this day in 1866, Butch Cassidy, the last of the great western train-robbers, is born in Beaver, Utah Territory.
Born Robert Leroy Parker, he was the son of Mormon parents who had answered Brigham Young’s call for young couples to help build communities of Latter Day Saints on the Utah frontier.
Here’s the rest of the story:
