McGee: Worth the wait

We thought we’d go to one of the local fast food joints in town. It’s famous for its great sandwiches but also for its long waits. We thought we’d give it a try anyway.

We placed our order at the drive-thru.

“That’s a bit expensive for a couple of sandwiches and a side,” complained The Lady of the House.

“Welcome to life in the 21st century,” I said.

We pulled our car into the drive-thru line then sat and waited and waited…and waited. I even turned off the engine to save some gas. The Lady of the House and I had plenty of time to talk about the kids, the origin of the universe and quantum physics.

Turns out we didn’t have to wait quite as long as we thought because the guy in the pickup truck in front of us got angry and left the line.

We pulled up to the window and a chipper little face appeared and took our money. Moments later she returned. “Umm, we’re out of the stuff to make your sandwiches,” she said.

I chuckled. The Lady of the House was not impressed.

Since we’d already invested our time and money we ordered different sandwiches.

And we waited.

Moments later the chipper face appeared. “How about a free side?” she asked.

“Now we’re talking,” I said. We accepted free fried goodies.

And we waited.

Moments later the chipper face appeared. “How about some free drinks?” she asked.

“I could use a lemonade,” said The Lady of the House.

Enjoying our icy cold free beverages The Lady of the House said, “Now this deal’s looking better.”

And we waited.

Finally the chipper little face handed us our burgeoning bag of fried delights. “Maybe they even put extra bacon on the sandwiches,” I said.

“One can but hope,” said The Lady of the House with a smile.
