CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team jumped on 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M early on Friday. Unfortunately, the fun didn’t last long.
Sophomore Amanda Lale capped a three-run Zias first inning with a two-run single. The Lady Buffs then scored eight runs in the third and five in the fifth for a 14-5 Lone Star Conference South Division win, called by the eight-run rule when left fielder Meghan Slattery hit her 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot with two out in the fifth.
WT (39-14, 13-7 South) cruised to a 17-0 win in the nightcap. The teams finish out their three-game series, and the regular season, with a noon (MDT) contest today.
Junior Erin Roufosse (7-28) should have been out of the third inning with ENMU’s 3-0 lead intact in the opener, but the Zias committed three errors behind her in the inning, making all the runs unearned.
WT’s Marci Womack (18-7) gave up five hits to the Zias (13-30, 3-17) in the top of the first, then retired 10 of 11 hitters before Melanie Alderette led off the fifth with a single and scored on Paige Colburn’s one-out triple. Colburn came home on a groundout by Howard, making it 9-5.
Colburn finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Alderette was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Howard also had an RBI single in the first.
In the second game, Shelbey Cockrell (20-7) pitched a five-inning three-hitter, walking none and striking out 12, while WT leadoff batter Alyssa Lemos singled twice, walked twice, drove in three runs and scored four.
Leading 2-0, the Lady Buffs scored six runs on four hits and two Zias errors in the second. They chased ENMU’s Brittany Widner (6-10) with nine runs on six hits in the fourth, including a two-run triple by Kristina Myles and two-run singles by Brooke Webster and Lemos.
