May 1 — Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records:


• An officer was dispatched to the area of City Park about 11:55 a.m. in reference to two girls fighting. He was told they were on Ninth Street.

The officer located the two 17-year-old girls and took a report.


• About 8:40 a.m., an officer was sent to the 400 block of West 15th Street for a burglary report.

A 68-year-old man said someone entered his home between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. the day before.

The intruder took three pairs of alligator boots, a pair of lizard boots , another pair of exotic boots and two silver buffalo belt buckles from the master bedroom. A replica Old West .45-caliber pistol and six knives were stolen from a display table in the dining room.

The total value of the property was $2,175.

The officer found no signs of forced entry and determined the thief was wearing gloves.

The man told the officer he suspected someone but wanted to ask around before the officer began questioning anyone.

• An officer was contacted about 12:30 p.m. to respond to a fight at Portales High School.

The males involved, ages 15 and 20, were separated and released to their guardians.

• An officer went to the 2000 block of South Avenue I about 11:05 p.m. to check on the welfare of a child.

A dispatcher told him an anonymous caller said there was a 3-year-old at the residence without any electricity and adults were using drugs.

A 23-year-old woman answered the door, and the officer smelled marijuana coming from inside the apartment. Once inside, the officer found a 24-year-old man, his 2-year-old son, a 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

At the 24-year-old man’s feet was an open bottle of beer.

When the officer asked questions about the situation, the 33-year-old said he was out of jail on bond and the 24-year-old said he was on probation.

The 23-year-old woman, who said she lived in the apartment, questioned the officer about why he was there, made a call and told him she wasn’t going to say any more.

The officer contacted the Adult Probation Hotline about the 24-year-old man and was told to arrest him.

The 23-year-old woman told the officer she had a marijuana joint and begin removing items from her pockets. Then she said she didn’t have it any more because it was all smoked.

The woman’s aunt arrived and instructed her to give consent for the officer to check the apartment. The officer found no more drugs but discovered a 23-year-old intoxicated woman sleeping in a bedroom.

The 24-year-old man contacted his mother to take custody of his son, which she did. The man was arrested for probation violation.


• About 9:40 a.m. at the Portales Police Department, an officer spoke with a 33-year-old man about theft of mail.

The man said a package was delivered to his address in the 1000 block of East Amazon Street about 11:05 a.m. April 20, but he was out of town and never received it. He said the package contained four beer mugs, four wine glasses, candy, mail and a picture of his nephew.

Two days later, the man said, another package containing mail and a letter from the Internal Revenue Service was delivered. He said a female signed for the package, but he didn’t receive it.

The man said he lived alone and no one had authorization to sign for the package.

He said he spoke to a man at a neighboring residence, and that man denied taking or signing for the mail. The rental agency told the 33-year-old that a female was leasing the apartment and no other tenants were authorized.

About 9:30 a.m. Friday, the 33-year-old man said, he found the empty wine glass box that was in one of the packages in the trash container shared by his residence and the apartment where he spoke to the other man.

The officer noted his intent to try to identify the female neighbor and get a copy of the signed package delivery document. The case was inactive pending more information.
