Portales Woman’s Club
The Portales Woman’s Club met May 11 with President Della Kobernick presiding. The Collect was led by Doncella Caywood, the pledges by Jan Smartnick and Gaynelle Thomas gave the invocation.
There were 26 members and four guests present. Following breakfast, Jane Hilliard and Dianne Parker introduced Gabriella Garcia a senior at Portales High School, and her mother Christina, along with Hannah Cissel, a sophomore at PHS and her mother Cindy.
Garcia is the recipient of the club’s scholarship, and Cissel with be the HOBY representative from Portales. Both young women thanked the club.
The minutes from the April meeting were approved, and the treasurer’s report was filed. Anne McMath won the door prize. A letter was read from Mildred Plexico, thanking the club for the birthday wishes on her 100th birthday.
Teresa Howard, civic chairman, asked for volunteers to help at the Serenity Garden on June 4. The membership approved a board recommendation to add this project to civic projects.
Julie Nickles and Doncella Caywood reported on the recently attended state convention. Kobernick and June Ferguson shared some of the highlights and awards.
Caywood, hospitality chair, presented Kobernick with an engraved plaque from the club in recognition of her service as president. Kobernick gave a new vacuum cleaner to the club as her gift.
The following officers were installed by Gaynelle Thomas to serve for 2011-2012: Immediate Past President Della Kobernick; President Teresa Howard; First Vice President Patrice Tompkins; Second Vice President Amie Franz; Third Vice President Beva Spotswood: Treasurer Wanda Pettus; Recording Secretary Julie Nickles; and Corresponding Secretary Anne McMath. The new President’s theme is “Reach Out and Make a Difference.” Kobernick presented the president’s pin and gavel to Howard.
Erinn Burch, chair of the hostess committee, introduced others on her committee: Gaynelle Thomas, Rosalie Richards and Judy Piepkorn.
The club will not meet again until the fall.
