Leave fireworks to professionals

I probably haven’t bought so much as a firecracker since I was 15. So it was a little unsettling at first to order more than $10,000 worth of fireworks in my new job as Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce executive director.

I love big public fireworks displays. I just never saw the sense in risking my fingers for something less than the ultimate set off in the backyard. This year, after so many bad fires, I don’t see the sense in risking someone’s property or life for the sake of a private display.

With more than $10,000 to raise for our public fireworks display in Portales it’s a given that I would be urging people to donate. But with conditions so dry I’ll go one step further and ask people to forgo the fireworks they would normally buy their family and put that amount toward a donation to the Portales fireworks fund.

Trained professional pyrotechnicians will shoot our public display, with trained emergency personnel on standby. Those same emergency professionals have worked out how to keep their equipment and personnel available to the community while on standby so that everyone is served.

We’ve also raised the bar on fun for this year’s July 4th celebration. First of all we’ve moved the action across the street from Greyhound Arena to the grassy area just south of the ENMU soccer field. There we’ll have a stage set up with live music from a variety of bands beginning at 4 p.m. We’ll also have booths offering a variety of refreshments and items for purchase.

We’ll have kids’ games and activities from face painting to carnival-type games such as ring toss and beanbag toss to a bouncy house and more.

At dark, the fireworks show, choreographed to traditional and contemporary patriotic music played over the sound system, will begin.

There’s no admission, all you need to do is bring your chairs or blankets out and enjoy the music and fireworks.

You can enjoy the whole evening free of charge (except for food and drinks) but I guarantee you’ll enjoy it just a little bit more if your donation helped make it all happen.
