Big change

Cannon Air Force Base Commander Col. Stephen Clark will pass leadership of the 27th Special Operations Wing to Col. Albert Elton II during a change of command ceremony 9 a.m. Friday morning at the base.

Cyclists with the Journey of Hope cross-country bicycle trip are set to stop in Portales to meet residents and perform a puppet show about people with disabilities.

They’re scheduled to arrive between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday at City Park, according to information from City Hall. The event is open to the public.

On this day in 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins.

Over the next five years, a total of 21,000 men would work ceaselessly to produce what would be the largest dam of its time, as well as one of the largest manmade structures in the world.
