The following governing bodies in Roosevelt County meet today:

• Roosevelt County Commission, 9 a.m. at the Roosevelt County Courthouse. The agenda includes votes on proposals for redistricting services and for assessor and tax software.

• Portales City Council, 7 p.m. at Portales City Hall.


The ribbon cutting for the now-city owned Colonial Park Golf Course is 10 a.m. at course.

On this day in 1876, “Wild Bill” Hickok, one of the greatest gunfighters of the American West, is murdered in Deadwood, S.D.

According to legend, Hickok held a pair of black aces and black eights when he died, a combination that has since been known as the Dead Man’s Hand.
