Hounds to practice at 6:30 a.m. due to heat

Seventh-year Eastern New Mexico University football coach Mark Ribaudo is preparing to welcome upwards of 150 prospects to the start of practice this week.

Ribaudo said Monday night that ENMU players are scheduled to check in today. Practice starts Thursday morning.

“We’ve got 152 on the list,” Ribaudo said. “I’m guessing we’ll have somewhere in the high 130s or maybe 140 (show up).”

Because of concerns over the heat, the Greyhounds will practice from 6:30 a.m. to perhaps 9 a.m. on each of the first five days. After that, Ribaudo said the team would decide on times for practice or whether they would have any two-a-days.

“I’m not very happy about it,” he said of the heat. “I’m not very comfortable with (practicing in it).”

The Hounds were 5-6 last season, including 3-3 in their only season in the Lone Star Conference North Division. With five Oklahoma schools leaving the LSC, the nine remaining football-playing institutions will play a single-round-robin this year.

ENMU has scrimmages on tap at Greyhound Stadium for 9 a.m. on Aug. 17 and 20, and for 6 p.m. on Aug. 27.

The season will begin on Sept. 3 when ENMU hosts New Mexico Highlands in a 7 p.m. non-league contest.
