Portales school officials excited to start

Enthusiasm is in the air as classes start today at Portales Most students will jump right into their routine for the year.

James Elementary School will have testing by appointment this week and begin classes Aug. 23, according to Principal Mark Gormley.

Testing at James will be for first and second grades to assess where they are academically, Gormley said.

Gormley anticipates a smooth transition into the school year since this is their second year in a new building.

Returning students know what’s going on now and the new first-graders will have a period of time to adjust, Gormley said.

Steve Harris has been the Portales Junior High principal for 13 years and just as every other year, he anticipates a successful academic year and that everything will run smoothly.

“The students will have no lag time once school starts,” said Harris.

He said they will get all the general information they need during first period and begin their curriculum right away.

“Most of the students seem to be excited to be back to school,” said Sara Meeks, seventh- and eighth-grade history teacher.

“We are definitely looking forward to this year,” said Liz Saiz, parent of a junior high student.

Saiz’ son is now an eighth-grader. She said they have all the supplies they need already and now they just need to meet the teachers with the goal of having a good year.

Students, teachers and other school officials all said they have great expectations for the upcoming school year.
