The third time proved to be the charm Thursday for Colorado School of Mines.
After letting a pair of one-goal leads slip away, junior midfielder Megan Woodworth converted a cross passing from junior Aubrey Bagley about 4 1/2 minutes into overtime as the Orediggers edged Eastern New Mexico University 3-2 in the women’s soccer regular-season opener for both teams at the ENMU pitch.
The Zias forced overtime when freshman midfielder Angela Sandoval converted a cross from junior midfielder Desiree Dominguez to make it 2-2 with about 17 1/2 minutes left in regulation.
ENMU’s first goal came earlier in the half when freshman midfielder Angela Sandoval converted a cross from junior midfielder Desiree Dominguez, but Mines’ Erin Onat scored off a deflection in front of the Zias’ net less than a minute later.
Mines is coming off its third NCAA Division II tournament berth in the six-year history of the program. The Orediggers were picked for third place this season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
ENMU returns to action on Sunday at Odessa, Texas, in a noon (MDT) clash against Texas-Permian Basin.
