HOBBS — Sophomore midfielder Luiz Buosi scored in the third minute and freshman midfielder Emmanuel Carranza later added a goal and an assist as the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 win over University of the Southwest on Thursday.
Buosi scored after a flurry of deflections in front of the Mustangs’ net with 2:25 gone in the match. Then Carranza fired a through pass to freshman midfielder Anthony Bardon for a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes gone.
The Hounds added a pair of goals about two minutes apart midway through the second half, by freshman midfielder Tyler Wagley and Carranza, for insurance near the middle of the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Matt Malak was called on for just one save in earning the shutout for the Hounds. Abram Medina had eight saves in goal for the Mustangs (0-2).
ENMU returns to action on Sunday as part of a doubleheader against Texas-Permian Basin at 3 p.m. (MDT) in Odessa, Texas. Women’s teams from the schools clash at 1 p.m.
