Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

Special Olympics in town

The Special Olympics New Mexico Equestrian Team is riding into Clovis for statewide competition Sept. 16.

Competitions continue for two days at the Curry County Events Center.

Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m. and include lighting of the torch, the Olympic oath and performances by Special Olympics coaches, riders and the Cattle Capitol CowBelles.

Team support

Eastern New Mexico University alumni and friends are gathering to support the ENMU Greyhound football team when they go on the road to play University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday.

A pre-game social is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the LA Quinta Inns & Suites San Antonio Convention Center, and the group will depart at 5 p.m. to attend the game together.

Kick-off is at 6 p.m. in the stadium located on the IWC campus.

Kitchen tip

While frying onions, add a little milk — this will help retain a rich color and prevent them from burning.

Quirky quote of the day

“A word to the wise ain’t necessary — it’s the stupid ones that need the advice.” — Bill Cosby

Today in history

On this day in 1877, Oglala Sioux chief Crazy Horse is fatally bayoneted by a U.S. soldier after resisting confinement in a guardhouse at Fort Robinson, Neb.

A year earlier, Crazy Horse was among the Sioux leaders who defeated George Armstrong Custer’s Seventh Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana Territory.
