ENMU men score first soccer win over Midwestern

Midwestern State had the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team’s number until Friday.

Freshman forward Abayneh Crosby scored 13 minutes into the second half and the Greyhounds edged No. 7 Midwestern State 2-1 to stay unbeaten in Lone Star Conference play.

It was the Hounds’ first win over Midwestern State in 14 tries.

ENMU (5-2-4, 3-0-1 LSC) started the day tied for first with Incarnate Word.

Junior defender Michael Stewart’s header 27 minutes into game gave Eastern its first lead over Midwestern State since September 16, 2005, a span of 1,075 minutes.

Just seven minutes later, Fernando Garza intercepted the ball when the Hounds were trying to clear the ball and score from the top of the box to tie the game.

Each team finished with 16 shots, with the Mustangs holding a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

ENMU goalkeeper Matt Malak made four saves.

Zias Fall to No. 4 Wildcats — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team battled No. 4 Abilene Christian to a scoreless tie for 79 minutes before falling 1-0 Friday in a Lone Star Conference match in Abilene, Texas.

Andrea Carpenter one-timed a pass from teammate Lyndsey Womack past ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas to keep the Wildcats unbeaten on the season (11-0-1) and LSC play (7-0-1).

The Zias (4-5-3, 2-3-3) lost to ACU 3-0 at home last month.

ACU outshot the Zias 8-2.

Cardenas finished with five saves.

Senior midfielder Andrea Elizondo had four shots for Eastern, including the only shot on goal.
