CANYON, Texas — West Texas A&M scored a pair of goals in a span of less than two minutes late in the first half Friday night and the Lady Buffs held on for a 2-1 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University.
With the loss, the Zias (8-6-3, 6-4-3 LSC) are locked into the No. 3 seed in the upcoming six-team conference tournament. Had ENMU won, it would have had a chance to catch Midwestern State (10-5-2, 8-4-1) for second place and a first-round tourney bye. The Zias travel to Midwestern State in Sunday’s noon (MDT) regular-season finale, a makeup of an earlier rainout.
Junior midfielder Andrea Elizondo put the Zias in front in the 17th minute with her second goal of the season, but the Lady Buffs (8-8-1, 5-7-1) got tallies from senior forward Leslie Briggs and freshman midfielder Jessie Thomas in the final five minutes of the half to pull in front.
The second half was relatively even, but the Zias couldn’t punch in the tying score. Yvette Bedoy made three saves in goal for the Lady Buffs, while ENMU senior Sierra Cardenas finished with seven saves.
