After they finish their four years at Texico High School in the spring, twins Jordyn and Jaylyn Cooper are planning to be together for the next four as well.
The Coopers, who verbally committed to Eastern New Mexico University for basketball during the summer, signed their letters of intent with the school earlier this week.
For now, the 5-foot-10 guards are hoping to add a second Class 2A state basketball championship to the four they’ve won in volleyball, especially after losing in last year’s basketball finale to Navajo Pine.
“We’re anxious to get the (basketball) season under way,” said Jordyn Cooper. “That definitely didn’t come out the way we wanted. We’ve spent a lot of time in the weight room over the summer.”
The Coopers were recruited during a summer basketball camp at ENMU by first-year women’s coach Lindsey Wilson.
“She watched us play at Eastern’s team camp,” Jordyn Cooper said. “She was just real interested in us, so it was a good deal.”
Between them, the Coopers averaged around 27 points and 13 rebounds in 2010-11 as Texico went 26-3. The Lady Wolverines, who took the 2A title in 2010, are 74-16 in their first three seasons.
“Jordyn and Jaylyn Cooper are great additions to our team,” Wilson said. “They’re smart basketball players, and they come from a solid program.”
Both players are impressed with Wilson’s relatively laid-back coaching style, which was put to the test in a pulsating 100-96 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday night at Greyhound Arena in a game the Coopers watched in person.
“I thought she looked really positive,” Jaylyn Cooper said of Wilson. “I like the way she coaches.”
The Zias are 1-1, having played competitively in an 84-74 loss to No. 6 Fort Lewis on Saturday.
“To play within 10 of Fort Lewis was really impressive,” Jordyn Cooper said.
The twins were hoping to get the opportunity to play together in college, and are ready for the challenge.
“There’s going to be a big difference between college ball and high school ball, but hopefully the transition’s a quick one,” Jordyn Cooper said.
