KINGSVILLE, Texas — Junior guard Ashton Brown led four players in double figures with 19 points and Texas A&M-Kingsville obliterated Eastern New Mexico University on the boards Thursday night in rolling to a 77-69 victory over the Greyhounds in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.

The Javelinas (6-3), bouncing back from a one-point loss at home on Monday night to St. Mary’s, snapped ENMU’s seven-game winning streak. Senior guard Reggie Nelson had 20 points for the Hounds (7-2), while junior center Greg McFarland came off the bench for a season-best 16 points and senior forward Aaron Edwards added 11.

Marcus Ford added 11 points and Reid Wallace and reserve Marshall Bonds III scored 10 each for the Javelinas.

Kingsville posted a 41-20 edge on the glass, including a 15-4 margin in offensive rebounds. ENMU’s leading rebounder was senior guard Stefan Mirabal with four, while Kingsville had six players with at least that many in the game.

The Javs led the entire night except for a 7-7 tie on McFarland’s layup with 4 1/2 minutes gone. Ford then got inside for a dunk, sparking an 8-2 Javelinas run.

ENMU kept the game close for a while, pulling to 21-19 on a free throw by Mirabal with 7:41 to go in the half. Brown then went off for two 3-pointers and a 3-point play in a 16-5 spurt that opened the biggest margin of the half at 37-24 with two minutes left.

A basket by McFarland and Edwards’ 3-pointer just before the buzzer made it 37-29, but the Javelinas went up 42-31 on a 3-pointer by Wallace with 19:18 left and kept the margin in double figures for most of the rest of the game.

A 5-0 run by ENMU cut the lead to 67-61 with just under 4 1/2 minutes left, but the Javelinas stretched their lead back to 13 with under two minutes to go.
