A report on the investigation into the death of a man in Roosevelt County jail should be completed by Friday, Roosevelt County Chief Deputy Sheriff Malin Parker said Wednesday.

Darrell Lewis of Clovis was found hanging by the neck in his cell Dec. 19 according to Roosevelt County Manager Charlene Hardin. Lewis, 22, died the next day at a Lubbock hospital.

Hardin described the incident as an apparent suicide.

Lewis was found less than five hours after a video arraignment in Portales Magistrate Court on a charge of felony child abuse.

Lewis was hanging from his bunk with a white cloth wrapped around his neck 35 minutes after he was last seen alive by detention center staff at 4:50 p.m., when he was served dinner, according to Hardin.
