My turn: Adventures wait at home

Alisa Boswell

I’ve enjoyed an 80-degree Christmas with my adventures in Florida over the last week.

I’ve had the enjoyment of playing on beaches, seeing sea turtles, manatees and dolphins and trying Mediterranean cuisine for the first time. I think my favorite part was building a sandman instead of a snowman.

Here are some things I have learned about Florida in my first trip to the state:

• There’s at least one ice cream shop on every street.

• 60 degrees is sweater weather.

• Cargo shorts are very popular attire.

• Florida is the land of variety with residents who originate from all over the U.S., South America and other nations.

I confess I would be more prepared to return home if it was higher than 30 degrees in New Mexico. But as much as I dislike being cold, there is always some measure of adventure and beauty waiting for me in the Land of Enchantment.

While on the subject of local adventure, tonight is the next Fifth Fridays for Portales with the square coming “alive after five” with food, music and other entertainment.

I’m sure a lot of New Year activities and fun will be going on this weekend, so please remember, Portales, to celebrate safely.
