Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Friday briefing.

Happy Chinese New Year

Eastern New Mexico University is hosting a Chinese New Year's Banquet at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Campus Union Ballroom.

Tickets are $15 and must be reserved today.

ENMU has a number of students from China who will share their culture. Performances include Chinese traditional folk dance, traditional instruments, singing, chorus by American students, delicious food and much more.

Melrose meeting

There is a Public hearing 4 p.m. today at the Melrose Senior Center, 427 Main St., to discuss the completion of the Melrose Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase 3. Information: 763-6016.

Spelling contest

The Carol Erwin Spelling Bee starts at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Buchanan Hall Music Building at ENMUl.

Roosevelt County's most ambitious young spellers are competing all day.
