Wednesday morning briefing: Red hot, cheap books and the meaning of words

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Wednesday briefing.

Red hot chilies (sort of)

The Eastern New Mexico University Department of Music will present Texas Tech's Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Quartet at 7 p.m. Thursday in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The group, composed of David Dees (soprano and alto saxophones), Ben Robinette (alto saxophone), Sesha Wallace (alto and tenor saxophones) and Adam Camey (alto and baritone saxophones), derives its name from the world's hottest chili pepper.

Heads up

There's a special Civil Aviation Board meeting 6 p.m. today in the assembly room at City Hall.

Information: 763-9654.

Books cheap

The Friends of the Library book sale is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the Clovis-Carver Library.

Information: 763-5315.

Kitchen tip

Add dried instant potato flakes to homemade soups and sauces to thicken. This won't change the flavor and is a sure trick when a dish sauce turns out too watery or thin.

Today in history

Today, the OED is the definitive authority on the meaning, pronunciation and history of over half a million words, past and present.
