Third baseman Josh McMahon drove in four runs with a pair of hits and New Mexico Highlands outslugged Eastern New Mexico University 14-10 on Tuesday in a game shortened to five innings, in part due to the blustery conditions.
The Cowboys (6-1) had two innings of at least five runs while the Greyhouds (6-5) had one. Both teams came into Tuesday’s game with staff earned run averages of under 4.00.
The Cowboys, who got a two-out solo homer from center fielder Clay Mohr in the top of the first, opened a 6-1 lead with five runs in the second to chase ENMU starter Ryan Boydstun. McMahon, batting ninth, douled to drive in the first two runs of the inning.
ENMU tied the game 7-7 with a five-run third featuring a two-run homer from third baseman Daniel Binz, his first of the season, and run-scoring singles by Dillon Downs, Blake Thomsen and Luis Quinones.
Highlands broke through for seven-runs in the top of the fifth as McMahon and designated hitter Jordan Chavez delivered two-run singles. Joe Huwer’s two-run single capped a three-run ENMU fifth before Greg Fowler, the third Highlands pitcher, got designated hitter Mitch Wolfe on strikes to end it.
Downs, who had a pair of triples, and shortstop Alex Schultz each went 3-for-3 for the Hounds, who outhit NMHU 16-11. Huwer was 3-for-4 while Binz added an infield RBI single and finished 2-for-3.
The Hounds return to action against Abilene Christian at 5:05 p.m. (MST) on Friday in opener of a four-team round-robin hosted by ACU. ENMU faces Tarleton State on Saturday and Cameron on Sunday in 12:05 p.m. (MST) starts.
