If nothing else, the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team has shown plenty of spunk this weekend.
After Saturday, they finally have some results to go with it.
ENMU trailed 11-2, 11-2 and 5-0 in the first three games of their Lone Star Conference series against Abilene Christian at Greyhound Field. But after falling short 11-8 on Friday, the Greyhounds stormed back for a 13-12, 17-9 sweep on Saturday, pounding out 32 hits in a pair of seven-inning games and snapping their 10-game losing streak.
According to ENMU sports information, the first-game comeback is believed to be the program's largest since it was reinstated in 1992. The Hounds erased an eight-run deficit to win at Angelo State in 2010.
ENMU, which also posted a non-league victory over the Wildcats this spring, has three wins over ACU in a season for the first time since 1995. The teams end their four-game set with a 1 p.m. single game today.
ACU (17-15, 5-6 LSC) took an 11-2 lead in Saturday's opener with six runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Hounds (11-17, 2-9) battled back with four in the fifth and seven in the sixth, pulling to 12-11 on a bases-clearing double by designated hitter Mitch Wolfe before catcher Peter Creamer tied it with an RBI double and scored what proved to be the game-winner on third baseman Sam Hedrick's single to center.
Sophomore right-hander David Johnson (1-0) survived an eventful sixth to earn the win, and sophomore right-hander Chris Bataska got Wildcats catcher Rodge Macy on strikes with two on in the seventh for his third save.
Wolfe, Creamer and freshman shortstop Dylan Nault all had three hits for ENMU, which tied a season high for the second day in a row with 17 hits.
In the second game, junior left fielder Luis Quinones hit a two-run single in the second and a two-run triple in the third as the Hounds turned a 5-0 deficit into a 9-7 lead and never looked back.
Quinones and second baseman Daniel Binz each had three of ENMU's 15 hits, while Hedrick scored three runs and drove in three with a squeeze bunt and a two-run single.
Sophomore right-hander Brett Humphries (3-0) relieved starter Joe Jones with one out in the second and went the rest of the way, allowing seven hits and four runs (two earned). Kenny Herman (0-1), the second of four ACU hurlers, took the loss.
