ARTESIA — Sophomore Emily Walker took the No. 3 doubles championship and teamed with sophomore Jessie Privett to win No. 2 doubles as the Portales Lady Rams finished fourth in the eight-team, two-day Artesia Invite tennis tournament.
Onate took the girls team title with 38 points, to 30 for Alamogordo, 29 for Lovington and 28 for the Lady Rams.
Walker went to a supertiebreaker to win 6-1, 5-7, (10-5) in the quarterfinals at No. 3, then posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over a Lovington opponent in the semifinals and a 6-0, 6-3 decision against a New Mexico Military foe in the championship match.
In doubles, Walker and Privett beat a Clovis team 4-6, 6-4, (10-8) in the quarterfinals, won against an Alamogordo tandem 6-4, 6-3 in the semis and beat an Artesia team 6-3, 6-3 for the title.
Freshman Samantha Lopez took second place at No. 6 singles, winning twice before losing to Benitez of Onate 6-2, 6-1 in the finals, and Lopez teams with freshman Belle Youngerwolf to finish fourth at No. 3 doubles.
Portales' boys finished with one team point, coming on a fourth-place showing by Austin Lucero and Mychael Sturm at No. 1 doubles. Onate also won that division with 42 points to 37 for Mesilla Valley and 30 for NMMI.
