Hounds’ rally falls short this time

For the fourth consecutive game, the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team fell into a huge hole. This time, the Greyhounds couldn't escape.
Abilene Christian scored seven first-inning runs — six after two were out — and led 9-0 after 1 1/2 innings on Sunday before hanging on for a 13-9 win at Greyhound Field and a split of the four-game Lone Star Conference series.
Second baseman Chuck Duarte made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run homer in the first and catcher Emmett Niland added a three-run double later in the inning off ENMU starter Gabriel Hemmer (1-3). Reed Watson greeted reliever Ryan Boydstun with a two-run single to center in the second.
Down 13-3, Luis Quinones hit an RBI double and first baseman Mitch Wolfe added a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for the Hounds (11-18, 2-10 LSC), who ended a 10-game losing streak by rallying from 11-2 and 5-0 deficits to sweep Saturday's doubleheader. Dylan Nault and Quinones collected RBI singles in the seventh to chase Aaron Lambrix (2-3), but the Hounds couldn't get any closer.
Duarte finished 4-for-5 for the Wildcats (18-15, 6-6) while Watson, Kevin Finklea and Kyle Conwell all had three hits as ACU outhit the Hounds 18-14.
Quinones was 4-for-5 and Wolfe, Nault and catcher Dillon Downs each chipped in a pair of knocks for ENMU. Wolfe drove in a fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
