Lady Rams golfers capture second tourney

ROSWELL — It's been a long time since the Portales High girls golf team has played.

The Lady Rams opened the season on March 1, cruising to victory over Clovis and Texico in a triangular hosted by Texico at the Farwell Country Club.

They returned to action on Tuesday in the four-team Spring River Invite and cruised to victory. PHS shot a four-person score of 358 for 20 stroke margin over Clovis.

Junior Paige Hartman at 79 and senior Tylar Rowley at 80 finished 1-2 in the tournament to lead the Lady Rams.

Eighth-grader Bailey Rowley and a player from another team inadvertently played each other's ball and were both disqualified. That was about the only downside for the Lady Rams.

"Our girls made a strong showing," PHS golf coach Loy Hampton said. "The girls played good all the way down. It was unfortunate Bailey got disqualified, but that happens.

"The girls have worked awful hard this last week."

The boys, meantime, finished last in a seven-team field at 398 in their season opener. Clovis won the tourney at 299, 13 strokes ahead of Hobbs.

Junior Jackson Powers shot 95 and freshman Ty Bergman finished at 97 for the Rams, but they are the only players with any previous experience.

Hampton said he hopes the Rams can knock off strokes as the season goes to become more competitive.

"Our goal is to just get better every tournament," he said.

PHS squads are back in action on Monday and Tuesday in the Leroy Gooch Invitational at Ruidoso.
