FLOYD — Floyd battled through the flu bug and a sixth-inning rally to edge Gateway Christian 5-4 on Lane Wallace's run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning in Wednesday's Class 1A state quarterfinal baseball game.
Caleb Martin pitched a three-hitter for the second-seeded Broncos, striking out 14 and walking five.
Wallace and Jose Torres led Floyd's nine-hit attack with two hits each.
The second-seeded Broncos (18-6) face district rival Melrose in next Wednesday's 2:30 p.m. semifinal in Manzano High School in Albuquerque. The sixth-seeded Buffaloes beat McMurdy 18-6 in the quarterfinals.
The other semifinal, at noon, sends top-seeded Capitan against No. 4 Questa after both scored narrow wins on Wednesday. The championship game is at 1 p.m. on May 10 at Isotopes Park in Albuqueruqe.
Floyd assistant coach and school superintendent Paul Benoit said four starters were sent home from school sick on Tuesday.
"Coach (Darwin Chenault) advised them to dig deep and do what they can," Benoit said.
Held scoreless for five innings, Gateway (8-9) scored four runs in the sixth. Caleb Kimberly had the only hit in the inning, an RBI single to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. Martin got a strikeout to end the inning with two runners aboard.
Floyd tied the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, capped by junior designated hitter James Kratzer's two-run single.
"They stayed focused and got behind Caleb (when he struggled)," Benoit said. "They kind of built him up.
"They never let up with their focus or their intensity."
